UDL and Antiracism

The SLUSD Strategic Plan cites antiracism and Universal Design for Learning as means for SLUSD educators to provide responsive support structures for student success within the classroom.

How does antiracism intersect with Universal Design for Learning (UDL)? The 3 UDL Principles (see below) offer concrete suggestions that can be applied to any discipline or domain to ensure that all learners can access and participate in meaningful, challenging learning opportunities. But without a critical eye to what UDL helps us provide access to, we may unknowingly build other barriers to learning for our students. While there is no simple answer to what antiracist UDL looks like, we must continue to analyze and refine our practice to ensure that all students are served in SLUSD.

As you participate in your sessions, we invite you to consider–how can I use this tool, strategy, or idea to help break down learning barriers and increase access for all of my students? How might racial or other biases be impacting my classroom practice?

UDL is grounded in scientific research on how people learn and is broken down into a set of 3 Principles that offer concrete suggestions to help all learners access and participate in meaningful, challenging learning opportunities. Learn more about the Principles by following the links below.

Does the lesson provide options that help all learners:

  • regulate their own learning?
  • sustain effort and motivation?
  • engage and maintain interest?

Find out more about Engagement here

Does the lesson provide options that help all learners:

  • reach higher levels of comprehension and understanding?
  • understand symbols and language expressions?
  • perceive what needs to be learned?

Find out more about Representation here.

Does the activity provide options that help all learners:

  • act strategically to demonstrate understanding?
  • express themselves fluently?
  • actively respond?

Find out more about Action & Expression here.
