Professional Learning Day (PLD)

What is PLD?

Presented by San Leandro Unified School District Educational Services

Since 2014, San Leandro Unified has been hosting districtwide Professional Learning Days (PLD) to inspire innovation, collaboration, and the love of learning. This year's PLD driving question comes from our SLUSD Strategic Plan:

How do we Engage, Educate, and Empower SLUSD students?

We have invited teacher-leaders, district specialists, and industry experts to share practices and facilitate our professional learning spaces as we hone our ability to provide effective and meaningful learning experiences for our students. Our hope is that you leave each session with additional tools, strategies, and inspiration to continue doing the incredible work of teaching and supporting our students.

Please bring a charged laptop to your sessions. We can't wait to see you!

Where is PLD?

The October 2022 PLD will be held all day at the gorgeous Fred T. Korematsu (FTK) campus of San Leandro High School (SLHS), located at 13701 Bancroft Ave.

The SLHS student parking lot will be open. There is also ample street parking in the neighborhood.

The majority of sessions, as well as breakfast and lunch, will be on the FTK campus throughout the entire day.

Who comes to PLD?

SLTA members and some CSEA members attend PLD. Some staff have been pre-enrolled in targeted sessions based on content and audience. If you are a CSEA member please check with your supervisor regarding your assignment for the day.

What is UDL?

Our PLD is connected to the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework, a research-based approach to teaching and learning to give all students opportunities to learn. In our district Strategic Plan, UDL is a tactic for SLUSD educators to provide responsive support structures for student success within the classroom.

As you participate in your sessions, we invite you to consider–how can I use this tool, strategy, or idea to help break down learning barriers and increase access for all of my students?

UDL is grounded in scientific research on how people learn and is broken down into a set of Principles that offer concrete suggestions on ensuring that all learners can access and participate in meaningful, challenging learning opportunities. Learn more about the Principles by following the links below.

Does the lesson provide options that help all learners

  • regulate their own learning?
  • sustain effort and motivation?
  • engage and maintain interest?

Find out more about Engagement here

Does the lesson provide options that help all learners:

  • reach higher levels of comprehension and understanding?
  • understand the symbols and expressions?
  • perceive what needs to be learned?

Find out more about Representation here.

Does the activity provide options that help all learners:

  • act strategically to demonstrate understanding?
  • express themselves fluently?
  • physically respond?
